Dr Thomas McNamara, MD

Dr Thomas McNamara joined Great Basin Imaging in 2008. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, he completed his undergraduate degree at St John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He then went on to medical school at the University of Minnesota where he graduated with honors. A medical internship and neuroradiology fellowship followed at the University of California in San Francisco, plus an abbreviated fellowship in cardiovascular radiology at Stanford University.

During the 70's and 80's Dr McNamara worked in central California and at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. At Washoe Medical Center he developed revolutionary methods of clearing clots in arteries, veins and bypass grafts (thrombolysis.) This resulted in innumerable speaking engagements, national recognition, and recruitment to UCLA to be the Chief of Interventional Radiology in 1989. At UCLA, he developed the reputation for treating seemingly hopeless arterial and venous problems. This expertise and his leadership in clinical trials of new drugs and devices resulted in his becoming internationally acclaimed as an expert and author in vascular therapies, innovations, & research.

Board certified with CAQ certification by the American Board of Radiology, Fellow of the Society of Cardiovascular & Interventional Radiology, Fellow of the American Heart Association, Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and American Board of Radiology, as well as numerous other state, national imaging and medical societies.

His areas of particular interest/expertise & his insights are:
LIMB SALVAGE: "...probably 3/4 of amputations are preventable with the combination of prompt interventional improvement in blood flow, and modern wound care. Unfortunately, blood flow is often considered either untreatable or not critical, and treatment(s) either delayed or not tried.

STROKE: "...the trials we have participated in have demonstrated carotid stenting to have a significantly lower risk of death and heart attack compared to surgery; without a reduction in either immediate or long term benefit.

CONGENITAL ANGIOMAS & VASCULAR MALFORMATIONS: "...most can be treated with sclerosis or embolization resulting in less disfigurement & complications than surgical treatments."

VENOUS OCCLUSIONS & VENOUS ULCERS: "...post-phlebitic problems are awful, and could be prevented by early clot clearing. The worst venous cases are due to the combination of BOTH insufficiency & obstruction. The chronic obstructions can usually be cleared with thrombolysis, angioplasty/stenting with resultant improvement"

VARICOSE VEINS & TELANGIECTASES: "...most varicose veins are symptomatic; causing heaviness, fatigue, aching. Treatment is not just cosmetic. Surprisingly, the same is true for spider veins.

In his spare time Dr McNamara enjoys fishing, tennis, scuba diving and travel.
